Ron's Review - Rhode Island

Ron’s Review – Rhode Island

The Score: University of Dayton Flyers (11-4; 1-1) 74, Rhode Island Rams
(9-7; 2-0) 75.

Series Details: The Flyers and the Rams are now 11-6 after this afternoon’s loss to the Rams.

The Flyers and the Rams: This second loss on the road hurt bad, real bad. The Flyers were poised to go 12-3 and gain some respect but a loss by one seems to hurt more than a loss by ten. The loss takes the Flyers out of first place in the A-10 standings with a one-one record in the A-10. The Flyers have to win on the road this season if we expect to get any post season play.

A look at the stats makes you wonder how we could have possibly lost but two key stats standout clear: turnovers and foul shots. Good teams that want to participate in March Madness shoot better than 53% from the free-throw line. As I said after the UNC game, the Flyers are a good basketball team but not a great one until they solve the free throw problem and learn to protect the ball better. The Flyers are off for six days and play at the UD Arena against LaSalle at 7PM Saturday.

Ron’s Stars of the Game: Its hard to find stars from a losing effort but Kurt Huelsman, Nick Stafford and Andres Sandoval contributed some quality time and effort to this afternoon game above an beyond our regulars.

What We Needed for a Win: My basic ingredients for a win will change very little as the season progresses and we can see who the Flyer Faithful can depend on for the score.

Flyer or Team Flyer Essential Task for Victory How we did Sunday
Rebound advantage -5 +4!!!
Stafford/ Huelsman Point Total 7 7/10!!!
Charles Little 10 6
Roberts Point Total 18 19!!
Scott Point Total 8 14!!!
Binnie Point Total 4 2
Plummer Point Total 10 DNP
Johnson Point Total 8 7
Warren Point Total 2 0
Bench Play 5 18!!!
Flyer Total Turnovers 13 16 cost us the game
Flyer 2-pt Shooting % 0.498 0.560!!!
Flyer 3-pt Shooting % 0.330 0.530!!!
Flyer Free Throw % 0.790 0.530 cost us the game

How Ron Did: Ron predicted a Flyers will win by 2 points, 72-70; how I wish that were true since we lost 74-75.
